Join Linda Stiber Morenus, as she discusses the color printing methods and materials used for16th century Italian chiaroscuro woodcuts. By making 30 experimental chiaroscuro woodcut re-creations and comparing them to historic chiaroscuro prints she has gained insight into the relationship between the artistic process and print appearance. She has systematically analyzed the physical evidence gleaned from hundreds of works by Ugo da Carpi, Antonio da Trento and Niccolò Vicentino, individuating their workshop practices. Based on the observed patterns from this analysis a new distribution of authorship is proposed for a number of chiaroscuro prints with contested attributions.
